5 things you learn traveling alone

Traveling alone is one of the riskier and more challenging things in life, but it sure has its rewards.

1. How to speak up for yourself

Sometimes it’s hard to ask people for directions or ask someone to take a picture of you. When you’re traveling alone, there’s no one else there to speak up for you, and you’re forced to do it. Strangers, for the most part, are kind and willing to help you; don’t be afraid to ask.

2. How to eat in a restaurant by yourself

I don’t know about you, but I always felt awkward going into a restaurant and asking for a table for one. It felt like everyone was judging me. However through personal experience, I’ve learned that no one actually cares if you’re eating alone, and they actually probably think you are super cool for having the courage to do so.

3. Your weaknesses

I thought I was a pro at Google Maps before wandering off by myself. However, through a couple missed connections and wandering the wrong way, I learned that it’s definitely not my strong suit. Throughout your trip alone, you’ll definitely learn what you’re lacking in the skills department, but hey, the more you travel alone, the more you’ll grow and be able to overcome your weaknesses!

4. Your strengths

On the same token, you’ll figure out what you’re great at doing. I am good at creating a plan, and that definitely was a benefit when it came to traveling alone.

5. How awesome it is to discover the world on your own terms

Having a buddy to travel with is nice, but sometimes they don’t want to go to the same museums as you do, or eat at the same places. When you’re by yourself you can make your own decisions and follow your own schedule. The world is your oyster and cracking it open on your own is a journey that is unforgettable and necessary.
